Robert's Presentation at 1998 Rational User Conference

Integrating Rational Rose 98 with Visual J++

Objective

This presentation shows how to integrate Rational Rose with Visual J++. Developers will learn:

bulletmapping from UML and Rose to Java
bullethow to keep the model and code in sync
bullethow to use and extend Rose to generate detailed JavaDocs
bullethow to setup development environment for a group of developers

Abstract

The close integration between Rational Rose 98 and Visual Studio is possible thanks to the ability to enhance both products with custom scripts, macros, and add-ins, as well as accessing the tool functionality through OLE/COM.

The presentation discusses the mapping from UML (in general) and Rational Rose model (in particular) to Java. You will also learn how to setup Rational Rose and annotate your model to maximize the tool's capabilities for generating Java code and the related documentation. You will learn how to successfully reverse-engineer your existing Java code and how to keep your model, code, and documentation in sync.

The presentation also talks about the details of the complete development environment that integrates Rational Rose with Visual J++. The discussed integration is based on Visual SourceSafe, which serves as a glue between Rose and VJ++. In this part you will learn how to setup your development environment to support a group of developers working simultaneously on the same model and Java code. A particular strategy for utilizing Visual SourceSafe to maximize the productivity of a development team is presented here.
